Reading the market: ‘Guerrilla’ wayshowing project

Richard, of Rebuilding Place in the Urban Space, writes up our ‘guerrilla’ wayshowing project for the Florida Market. He and I developed a combined market directory and historical information sign based on the DiscoverDC trail system while extending that model into something more comprehensive and integrated. His write-up is strong (as always) so read the whole post. I’d like to highlight one paragraph which was our starting point for the project, essentially, our creative brief:

One of the big problems for the Florida Market District is what Kevin Lynch called legibility. People need an introduction in order to understand what appears to be a chaotic place, a place that was described by a tour goer once as “the anti-Whole Foods.”
